What Are Veneers?
How They Work
Veneers are small, thin, durable pieces of porcelain that are shaped to fit over your existing teeth and cover up minor cosmetic flaws. The process of a veneer placement is quite simple, and typically takes two appointments.
During your first visit, your mouth will be cleaned and numbed, and a thin layer of enamel will be removed from your teeth to ensure that the veneers fit seamlessly in your mouth. Dr. Zomorrodian will then take images of your teeth that will be used to create your custom veneers. At your last appointment, Dr. Zomorrodian will ensure that your veneers fit perfectly, then bond them permanently into place to give you a brand new smile!
Your Restoration Options
The Difference Between Veneers & Lumineers
Lumineers and traditional porcelain veneers are very similar except for one feature: Lumineers are ultra thin (about as thin as a contact lens). Since Lumineers are thinner than veneers, they often do not require the removal of any tooth enamel to prepare for treatment. This means that, unlike traditional veneers, Lumineers can usually be removed if you decide you don’t want them in the future.
Candidates for Veneers
Are Veneers Right For Me?
If you’re in good overall health and your mouth is free of any major oral issues like tooth decay or gum disease, you are likely a good candidate for veneers. Candidates for veneers also typically have good oral hygiene habits, and are non-smokers. How Do I Care For
My Veneers Or Lumineers?
For the most part, you can treat your new veneers or Lumineers just like you would treat your natural teeth. That means you should brush at least twice a day for two minutes, and floss once per day to remove food and bacteria from hard-to-reach places.
In addition, you should see Dr. Sahand Zomorrodian at Smile Pro Studio for a check-up every six months. He’ll check your teeth and veneers to make sure that everything looks good, and our team will clean and polish your teeth to ensure they stay bright and beautiful.
What Should I Avoid Doing
With My Veneers Or Lumineers?
Veneers or Lumineers may be strong, but they can be damaged, just like your natural teeth. To avoid this, there are a few things you should not do with veneers or Lumineers.
- First, don’t chew very hard foods with your front teeth. Ice, almonds and other hard foods can crack or dislodge your veneers. It’s best to chew these with your molars to minimize the risk of damage.
- You also should not chew non-food items like fingernails, pens and pencils, or any other such item with veneers. This could damage, crack or dislodge the veneer. Similarly, you should also avoid using your teeth as tools. Don’t use your teeth to help you do things like open bags and packages, tear tape, and so on. This can damage both your veneers and your natural teeth.
- We also would encourage you to cease smoking or using tobacco. Smoking and tobacco increase your risk of gum disease and cavities. And while tobacco won’t stain your veneers due to the nonporous surface of the porcelain material, it can stain your other teeth and ruin your smile.
To protect your veneers, you should also wear a night guard to protect your teeth if you grind them, and wear a custom-fitted athletic mouthguard when you play a contact sport.
If you can follow these tips, your veneers are sure to last a very long time, and your smile will look great for years to come. After your treatment, Dr. Zomorrodian will also give you some more tips and care instructions for your veneers, so make sure you follow these closely.
Do Veneers Last?
Mostly, this depends on how well you care for your veneers. If you follow the above tips and instructions, your veneers could easily last 15 years or longer. However, if you are not careful, you may damage or dislodge a veneer earlier. If you do damage or lose a veneer, it will need to be replaced to keep your smile healthy.
Do Lumineers Last?
According to the company that makes them, Lumineers can last up to 20 years with proper care. Again, though, this depends on how well you care for your teeth. Practicing proper oral hygiene and following your dentist’s instructions will prolong the lifespan of your Lumineers dramatically.
